Cinderella Opening Weekend

(Disney)

Cinderella is the belle of the box office ball. The live-action Disney fairy tale, starring Lily James as the glass slipper-wearing beauty, won its first weekend with $70.1 million, trouncing the competition.

The new Liam Neeson thriller Run All Night debuted to $11 million, which was good enough for second place. The Colin Firth spy action flick Kingsman: The Secret Service, meanwhile, took in $6.2 million in its fifth weekend, putting it in the #3 spot.

A trio of returning movies were in a tight race for fourth place. The Will Smith-Margot Robbie con artist movie Focus ultimately won the spot with $5.8 million. The Hugh Jackman robot flick Chappie was just a few thousand behind, but also rounded to $5.8 million while snagging fifth. Then The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, a celebration of old British people, landed sixth with $5.7 million.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water earned $4.1 million, securing the #7 spot. The Kevin Costner sports movie McFarland, USA brought in $3.7 million for eighth place. To round out the list, there was another close battle. In the end, American Sniper ($2.9 million) finished just ahead of The Duff ($2.9 million).

Fifty Shades of Grey, although right behind them, was knocked out of the Top 10 for the first time since its release a month ago, even as it crossed the $160 million-mark at the domestic box office. What did you see this weekend?
