This summer, the Doctors are in — three of them, in fact.
Titan Comics revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that this summer will see a comic book storyline bringing together the Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors from the long-running BBC science fiction series Doctor Who for the first time, written by longtime Whovian Paul Cornell.
The five-part storyline will replace the regular Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor, Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor and Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor comic series, and run weekly from mid-August through the end of September.
Details about the storyline — and the identity of the artist for the event — are being kept under wraps for now, but the presence of Cornell as writer is something that is sure to appeal to many Who fans by itself; in addition to having written for the show since its 2005 revival (Both the first season’s “Father’s Day” and the “Human Nature”/“Family of Blood” two-parter in season three were his work), Cornell has also written for the franchise in both prose and comic book spin-offs, including the Hugo Award-nominated The Girl Who Loved Doctor Who. Most recently, his work appeared in Marvel Entertainment’s Wolverine series, setting up last year’s “Death of Wolverine” event.
The Tenth and Eleventh Doctors, as played by David Tennant and Matt Smith respectively, have previously met in 2013's 50th Anniversary Special episode of the television series, but neither has encountered Peter Capaldi's incarnation of the character before now. (Capaldi — or, at least, his eyebrows — made a cameo appearance in the episode, months ahead of his "official" debut in the series.) According to Titan, the companions in the crossover event will be drawn from the current comic book series for each Doctor, meaning comic book originals Gabriella Gonzalez and Alice Obiefune in addition to the Twelfth Doctor's current traveling partner Clara Oswald.
The special crossover event launches Aug. 12, ahead of this year’s Doctor Who Comics Day on Aug. 15.
