Emile Hirsch could face up to five years behind bars after being charged on Thursday with assault for allegedly attacking Paramount executive Daniele Bernfeld two weeks ago at the Sundance Film Festival. On January 25, while at the Tao nightclub in Park City, Utah, a drunken Hirsch went up to Bernfeld, who he didn’t know, and after the two exchanged words, he grabbed her by the neck, threw her to the floor, and put her into a chokehold.
Bernfeld told authorities that she had blacked out, due to Hirsch choking her. Two other individuals at the club quickly pulled Hirsch off of Bernfeld. When police arrived on the scene, Hirsch acknowledged he had been drinking. They also noticed marks on Bernfeld’s neck.
Hirsch has now been officially charged with third degree felony aggravated assault, which could land him in prison for five years, as well as one charge of misdemeanor intoxication. The actor, best known for the film Into The Wild, was at the Sundance Film Festival for the premiere of his new film Ten Thousand Saints. Neither Hirsch nor his attorney has yet to issue a statement.
