Demi Lovato posted a message of empowerment on Instagram on Friday.
In a caption to a photograph of herself sunbathing in a bikini, the singer said that having a thigh gap does not necessarily equal beauty.
"Regardless of what society tells you these days... You don't have to have a thigh gap to be beautiful," she wrote. "It is possible to love your body the way it is. #fitness #health #acceptance #selflove."

Demi has herself suffered from body image issues and has learned to embrace her curves. She completed a stint in rehab in 2011 to treat bipolar disorder, cutting and bulimia.
"I've learned to appreciate my body for what it is. It helps to remind myself how far I've come," Demi told Fitness Magazine in December. "I recently saw pictures from my first tour, and I spent that whole summer performing in the heat in a red leather jacket because I was ashamed to show my arms. And that was when I was 105 pounds!"

The star added in the interview that she admires other entertainers who flaunt their fuller figures with pride.
"I'm also really inspired by other women in the spotlight right now who are embracing their curves," Demi continued. "Say what you will about the Kardashians, but they've really helped make curvy bodies beautiful again. It's so nice to look around and see women with hips and a butt, like Iggy Azalea and Jennifer Lopez. They have great figures, but you know they also work really hard for them and don't try to hide their curviness."
