The TLC show “My Husband’s Not Gay” is already sparking huge controversy, and it hasn’t even aired yet. The series follows four men living in Salt Lake City, Utah, who don’t identify themselves as homosexual despite having an attraction to men.
On the show, the four men choose to spend their lives with women, even though they’re primarily attracted to their own gender. Critics argue that the men have been forced to reject their sexual orientation because of their Mormon faith, and that the show casts homosexuality as something that can be ignored or treated.
“This show is downright irresponsible,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis in a statement. “No one can change who they love, and, more importantly, no one should have to. By investing in this dangerous programming, TLC is putting countless young LGBT people in harm’s way.”
A Change.org petition with more than 70,000 signatures is calling for TLC to cancel “My Husband’s Not Gay.” The petition was started by Josh Sanders, a gay Christian who once went through “reparative therapy” to “pray the gay away.” He ultimately chose to live as a gay man, and says the new reality show “promotes the false and dangerous idea that gay people can and should choose to be straight in order to be part of their faith communities.” The controversy was examined on Tuesday’s “Good Morning America.” See the video below.
