Michael Sam is engaged! The standout athlete and Vito Cammisano are set to marry after Sam proposed atop St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican last week. The couple’s engagement has been rumored in recent days, but it was only confirmed on Friday, when Sam posted a picture of the big moment on Twitter.

“@Vitcamm Thank you for saying yes,” tweeted the aspiring NFL player, along with a picture of himself on bended knee after popping the question to Cammisano (see right). Later, Cammisano posted a picture of himself wearing his new bling and looking ecstatic (see below).

Last May, Sam was drafted by the St. Louis Rams, becoming the first openly gay player to be selected in the NFL Draft. The defensive star, an All-American at the University of Missouri, had come out of the closet three months earlier, leading to enormous speculation about what his experience would be as the first openly gay NFL player.

The Rams cut Sam before the season started, and while he briefly signed on with the Dallas Cowboys practice squad, his NFL career his yet to take off. Even so, he has a lot to celebrate these days. Congratulations to Sam and Cammisano on their engagement.
