The French love Kristen Stewart. The actress has become the first American actress in 30 years to be nominated for an award at the César Awards, France’s biggest film honors. On Wednesday, Stewart received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her work in Clouds of Sils Maria.
For Stewart to win, she’ll have to knock off the formidable quartet of Marianne Denicourt, Claude Gensac, Izia Higelin and Charlotte Le Bon, all of whom sound way more French than she does. The César Awards take place on February 20, two days before the Oscars.
The last American actress to get a nomination was Julia Migenes for the 1984 film Carmen. Adrien Brody was the last American actor to receive a nod, winning the Best Actor prize for 2002’s The Pianist.
Stewart plays Valentine in Clouds of Sils Maria, which follows an aging actress (portrayed by Juliette Binoche) as she attempts to make a comeback (and make sense of her life) amid challenges. Binoche received a Best Actress nomination for her performance, and the movie itself is up for Best Film.
