The spotlight only shone brighter on Bieber, Cyrus, and Jenner throughout 2014, for better and worse. The Biebs started the year off with an arrest that made headlines worldwide, putting an even larger magnifying glass on every move he made thereafter. Cyrus used Instagram to unapologetically be herself, posting risqué photos most weeks of the year. And Jenner rocketed to the forefront of the modeling industry, even participating in some breast-bearing gigs. Whether they did good or bad, the trio have their haters, but Simpson thinks people should reconsider.

He says of Bieber, “People definitely give him a hard rap.” The two became quite close this year after spending time in the studio working on 14 songs. Simpson argues, “There’s certain people in the media that people pick on, you know? People just like to hone in on certain people like Bieber… or Miley… all people that I’m really close with.” He adds, “I definitely feel sorry for someone like Justin because he’s a good bloke.”

Simpson has grown fond of Cyrus, particularly in recent weeks. “She’s definitely at heart a very sweet, normal, cool girl,” he says. “We were spending time out at her ranch in Nashville last week and I’m like ‘Why do people say these things?’ She’s just the coolest chick.” He feels similarly about Jenner, who is tight with his girlfriend, Gigi Hadid. “I’ve known [Jenner] since I was like 14, but it’s people like that that get a bad rap and I’m not sure why,” he tells “Entertainment Tonight.”

As for Hadid, well, their on-and-off romance needs no defending. “I kind of realized that I didn’t want to be without her,” he confesses. Check out video of Simpson’s comments below, and tell us what you think.
