‘Better Call Saul’ Photo Drops Clues About Saul’s Brother (Exclusive)

Everyone loves Saul, but isn't it time to give his brother a little attention?

A new photo from AMC's Better Call Saul shows the inside of Chuck McGill's (Michael McKean) library, as his brother Jimmy McGill — also known as Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) — looks on.

We don't know much about Chuck, but the photo reveals a few clues (click to enlarge to see for yourself). For one, it's littered with medical books. There's Blood Transfusion Therapy: A Physicians Guide, as well as Conceptual Foundations: The Bridge to Professional Nursing Practice. Could Chuck be a doctor or a nurse of some sort? Or is this just part of some scheme the brothers are involved in?

Another clue: There's a Northwestern University mug. It seems Chuck attended a much more prestigious alma mater than his brother, who when we meet him in Breaking Bad, proudly displayed a diploma from the University of American Samoa law school in his office.

There are also family photos — an older couple dressed up for a black tie event,  and another 1940s-era photo of two small children. Let's just say this library is more personal and much less garish than the Constitution-themed digs we saw Saul inhabit in Breaking Bad.

Better Call Saul executive producers Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould have said the show's key mystery is how a man named Jimmy McGill became Saul Goodman — and why? They've hinted that some sort of trouble is responsible. We're guessing that Chuck is a key player in whatever that trouble is, as he and Jimmy look pretty concerned in this photo.

Better Call Saul is getting a two-night series premiere at 10 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8, and Monday, Feb. 9. It will air on Mondays at 10 p.m. in subsequent weeks. Saul stars Odenkirk and fellow Breaking Bad alum Jonathan Banks, whom we saw in an earlier clip.
