Johnny Depp gave a bizarre, slurred speech at the Hollywood Film Awards on Friday, leading to speculation that he was drunk or otherwise intoxicated. The actor was on stage to introduce Mike Myers’ documentary Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon when things seemed to go haywire. Check out video of his awkward speech below.
He began by struggling with “the weirdest microphone I’ve ever seen in my life,” before stumbling physically and verbally through his teleprompter remarks about the movie. Depp swayed and seemed to lose track of what he was saying as he paid tribute to Gordon, at one point blurting out an expletive before covering his mouth in surprise. “I mean, it’s one of those nights,” declared Depp, as the network cut to footage from the movie.
Depp’s incoherence, and what might have caused it, quickly became a major topic among the show’s viewers on social media. Backstage, Myers reportedly called Depp’s speech “very rock and roll, which is very appropriate for Shep Gordon,” who rose to prominence as a music manager. That is certainly one way of putting it.
