Is it Groundhog Day on The Vampire Diaries?

The whereabouts of Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) have become The CW drama's greatest mystery in season six, and though they made a brief appearance at the end of Thursday's premiere enjoying a nice pancake breakfast, even more questions were raised. A brand-new promo for next week's episode, "Yellow Ledbetter," has been released and it could provide the answer to where Damon and Bonnie ended up.

"We're living the same day all over again," Bonnie says as we see a close-up of a newspaper with the date "May 10, 1994" printed on the front page. "We are in hell," Damon says in response. How did they get there? Why 1994? Have they retained their memories? (In THR's poll, 29 percent of readers believed Damon and Bonnie were in purgatory.)

"They're somewhere, and we'll find out in the next episode," said executive producer Caroline Dries, adding that "it will be very clear what's happening."

If the episode title is a clue, "Yellow Ledbetter" is a Pearl Jam song that made its way to the rock charts in — you guessed it — the year 1994. And some food for thought: The premiere, "I'll Remember," is the title of a Madonna song, and episode three, "Welcome to Paradise," is the name of a Green Day tune — both from 1994. Sure explains the flannel.

The Vampire Diaries airs 8 p.m. Thursdays on The CW.
