James Franco is NOT joining Scientology, despite a new rumor that began with a report in Star. According to the magazine, the actor is currently “debating” whether to become a Scientologist, following in the footsteps of Tom Cruise and John Travolta.

A so-called “source” tells Star, “James is an avid sci-fi fan, and the religion incorporates a lot of theories from the sci-fi books of its founder, L. Ron Hubbard. James finds their beliefs rather interesting. He’s reading a few books on Scientology and seriously may join!”

Of course, Star also once falsely claimed Brad Pitt was interested in joining Scientology. It wrongly alleged that Cruise might leave Scientology. Star’s sister publication, the National Enquirer, infamously and inaccurately suggested that Robert Pattinson was being recruited to Scientology. Tabloids love to tie celebrities to stories about Scientology, even if there’s no truth to them.

Star has also had specific trouble with Franco, wrongly linking him to projects (like an Oscar Pistorius biopic) and women (such as Amber Heard and Mila Kunis). This latest story is also pure speculation. Franco denies having any interest in Scientology, and a rep for the actor tells Gossip Cop the religion rumor is “not correct.”
