Oscar Pistorius has been found guilty of culpable homicide — equivalent to manslaughter — in the shooting death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

On Friday, the former star athlete was convicted by Judge Thokozile Masipa, one day after escaping a more serious murder charge.

His sentencing hearing will begin on October 13.

Pistorius will remain out on bail until then.

A double-amputee sprinter who made history by competing in the 2012 Olympics, Pistorius shot and killed Steenkamp in their bathroom in the early morning hours of February 14, 2013.

He claims it was an accident, and that he believed he was firing at a burglar.

Judge Masipa ruled that Pistorius acted with negligence when he opened fire, and that even though the prosecution had been unable to supply enough evidence for a murder conviction, Pistorius still bore responsibility for Steenkamp’s death.
