Finally, one quick-thinking observer lobbed a missile at the crocodile, which diverted its attention.
The crocodile's leisurely pace may have been down to the fact that it was used to humans, having already become an "expert" in stealing fish from local fishermen.
"Unfortunately, that crocodile already associated us with food," Manuel Carrera told Notacaribe.
The lesson here, if there is one, is this: do not feed the local wildlife.
