Grey's Anatomy has landed an Oscar winner.
In her return to ABC, Geena Davis has joined the cast of Shonda Rhimes' long-running medical drama for a major arc in season 11, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Davis, who starred in the network's Commander in Chief from 2005-06, will play a surgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial.
The actress' casting fills a void left by former regular Sandra Oh, who departed at the end of last season, and after Grey's upped Caterina Scorsone to series regular. Grey's is also bringing back Kate Burton to reprise her role as Meredith's mother Ellis Grey, with Kelly McCreary, who plays Margaret Pierce, expected to heavily recur in the new season.
Rhimes told THR in July that the season 11 will likely have a heavy Meredith focus after Cristina's exit. "It's really a Meredith-centric season. There's a lot of growth. She's lost her person. Her sister has showed up. Her husband is chafing to go someplace else. She's got all these things going on. ... But for me right now, it feels like it's Meredith. I'm feeling her more acutely because she's lost her person," she said.
Davis is repped by CAA and Management 360. Since playing the president for ABC in Commander in Chief, Davis has starred in the TV miniseries Coma, In a World... and next appears in the feature Me Him Her.
