TV Ratings: ‘Mad Men’ Makes Steady Midseason Exit Over Holiday Weekend

Mad Men's blink-and-you-miss-it season 7A wrapped up on Sunday night. The seventh episode of the final run, its first ever midseason, marked the smallest ender since the second season -- having the disadvantage of airing over the holiday weekend.

Averaging 1.9 million viewers during its 10 p.m. broadcast, Mad Men was in line with the previous week. It follows a reasonable steady same-day streak that peaked with the April 13 premiere of 2.3 million viewers. To be sure, Mad Men's Sunday night showings have been off during its penultimate run. The premiere was also at a low since the second season, off 1.1 million viewers from the year prior. (The finale was down by less, year to year: 800,000 viewers.)

Time-shifting has helped make up for some of Mad Men's losses. The premiere jumped 62 percent in live-plus-3 day ratings to 3.7 million viewers. Among the key demo of adults 18-49, the episode was up 75 percent.

As for Sunday's adults 18-49 audience, Mad Men averaged 854,000.

Full DVR data for the season 7A will be available in the coming weeks, though AMC's play to split the final season probably means many are still holding out for a big boost in 2015. That's when the final batch of seven episodes are, much as Breaking Bad's did to unprecedented surges in 2013.
