New details for True Detective's second season have surfaced.
Creator Nic Pizzolatto revealed in a recent interview with radio program To the Best of Our Knowledge that he's "working with three leads" at the moment. True Detective's critically lauded freshman run was a two-hander with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, who are not expected to return.
"The characters are all new, but I’m deeply in love with each of them. We’ve got the entire series broken out with a couple scripts, and we’ll probably start casting in earnest within the coming month," Pizzolatto said.
While the first season was set in the Louisiana bayou, Pizzolatto is moving the show west. "It takes place in California -- not Los Angeles, but one of the much lesser known venues of California. And we're going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambiance of the place much like we did in season one," he said.
True Detective takes on the anthology format, introducing a self-contained case at the top of each season with a new cast.
Pizzolatto, who took part in The Hollywood Reporter's Emmy drama showrunners roundtable, was aware that McConaughey and Harrelson would likely be a one-season deal. "With two guys like that, I guess the concession would be, we're not going to use them again," he said. "People who do have active cinematic careers aren't going to want to come back for six years or five years."
