Game of Thrones “Purple Wedding” Episode Sets Torrent Piracy Record

(HBO)

“Game of Thrones” broke piracy records this week, with last Sunday’s stunning episode featuring the so-called “Purple Wedding” being downloaded illegally by 1.5 million people worldwide.

TorrentFreak reports that the buzz over the HBO show led to “the largest BitTorrent swarm ever,” with one tracker showing nearly 200,000 people sharing a single torrent at the same time.

“These are unprecedented numbers,” explains the site. “Never before have 193,418 people shared a single file simultaneously.”

According to estimates, various versions of the pirated episode were downloaded approximately 1.5 million times during the first 24 hours after the show aired, making it “the likely candidate to be crowned the most-downloaded TV show at the end of the year.”

This is nothing new for the HBO powerhouse.

Last summer’s “Game of Thrones” Season 3 finale became the most-pirated TV episode in history, and the show beat out “Breaking Bad” to be the most torrented series of 2013.
