Beyonce appears on one of the covers for the 2014 Time “100 Most Influential People” issue.
In praise of the music superstar, business leader Sheryl Sandberg writes, “Beyonce doesn’t just sit at the table. She builds a better one.”
“She raises her voice both on- and offstage to urge women to be independent and lead,” adds Sandberg, explaining that Beyonce’s secret to doing it all is “hard work, honesty and authenticity.”
Other entertainment figures to make the list include Miley Cyrus, Matthew McConaughey, Kerry Washington, Pharrell, Seth Meyers, Amy Adams and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Here are some of the things said about the honorees:
Dolly Parton on Cyrus: “If I didn’t know how smart and talented Miley is, I might worry about her. But I’ve watched her grow up. So I don’t. She knows what she’s doing.”
Richard Linklater on McConaughey: “Matthew loves people—simple as that. His goal is to connect, to translate, to listen, to be heard, to ascend one more step in this work in progress called life.”
Emily Blunt on Adams: “That’s what I love most about Amy — she’s silly and funny and dirty. And she’s incredibly honest. She’s self-admittedly terrible at small talk and hiding her feelings, which I really admire in an industry full of gush.”
Valerie Jarrett on Washington: “In a world that too often tells little girls to choose between womanhood and success, between femininity and a seat at the head of the table, both onscreen and off Kerry Washington embodies the promise that lives in all our young people to shape their own destinies and succeed as ‘gladiators’ for the causes in which they believe.”
Amy Poehler on Meyers: “It’s a brutal business, this late-night game. Thankfully the new kid in town is an old pro with a kind set of eyes and the skills to pay the bills.”
Colin Firth on Cumberbatch: “It’s rare to the point of outlandish to find so many variables in one actor, including features which ought to be incompatible: vulnerability, a sense of danger, a clear intellect, honesty, courage — and a rather alarming energy. I take no pleasure in feeling humbled, but there’s no getting around it. He must be stopped.”
Justin Timberlake on Pharrell: “That’s what Pharrell does. He injects that vibrant energy into the music in a way that you can feel. Whether it’s the chord changes that remind you of another time or the melody that instantly grabs you, you are transported to another place. You smile, you dance, you clap along. His music actually does make you happy.”
