Avril Lavigne Defends “Hello Kitty” Video: It’s NOT Racist!

(YouTube)

Avril Lavigne is defending her “Hello Kitty” music video against charges that it’s racist.

The clip uses quite a bit of Japanese imagery, and many of her detractors have slammed Lavigne for racial and cultural insensitivity.

On Wednesday, the singer took to Twitter, writing, “RACIST??? LOLOLOL!!! I love Japanese culture and I spend half of my time in Japan.”

She added, “I flew to Tokyo to shoot this video specifically for my Japanese fans, WITH my Japanese label, Japanese choreographers AND a Japanese director IN Japan.”

Last year, Katy Perry was similarly criticized for her use of Chinese and Japanese imagery.
