Tom Cruise has publicly admitted Scientology played a role in his divorce from Katie Holmes.

The actor made the admission in a September 9 deposition in his defamation case against Life & Style, which he’s suing for $50 million for claiming he “abandoned” Suri Cruise in the wake of his 2012 split from Katie Holmes.

Asked by a lawyer for the magazine whether Holmes left him in part because of Scientology, Cruise said, ”Did she say that? That was one of the assertions, yes.”

Questioned about whether Holmes divorced him to “protect” Suri from Scientology, Cruise replied, “I find that question offensive… There is no need to protect my daughter from my religion.”

The movie star did, however, reveal that Suri is no longer part of the religion.

Pressed about whether the Church would consider Holmes a “suppressive person” for leaving the religion, Cruise responded, ”That is a distortion and simplification of the matter. I don’t want to just give an oversimplification of religious doctrine.”

But he confirmed that his children Bella and Connor (from his marriage to Nicole Kidman) have had no contact with Holmes since their split.

Cruise also answered questions about missing Suri’s first day of school in New York, saying that although he was filming All You Need Is Kill in London, “If [Suri] had asked me to be there, I would have been there. I would have worked it out in any way I could.”

The actor also acknowledged that he didn’t see his daughter for more than 100 days — from when he wrapped the film in August to Thanksgiving.

“Unfortunately in this situation it was impossible,” said Cruise, who added that he talked to Suri on the phone nearly every day.

Gossip Cop will have updates as the case continues to unfold.
