Katy Perry has an ally in Lady Gaga.

Despite media efforts to pit the two pop stars as rivals, Gaga has come to her fellow singer’s defense amid the controversy surrounding Perry’s American Music Awards performance of “Unconditionally.”

As Gossip Cop previously reported, a backlash erupted after Perry took the stage dressed as a geisha and appropriated art from both Chinese and Japanese culture, leading to accusations of racism.

Gaga, who was in the AMAs audience for the performance, thinks the outcry is a bit of an overreaction.

“Maybe it’s because unconditionally means you’re supposed to love no matter what and geishas are paid?” she joked in an interview with Carson Daly.

Gaga then added more seriously, “I think people are generally too sensitive and they should just leave her be, but you know, I’m not really the person to ask.”

The “Do What U Want” singer got a bit of criticism for her own presidential-themed performance  — and Marilyn Monroe look — with R. Kelly, with some arguing it was disrespectful just a few days after the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination.

“We were trying, actually, to steer the performance away from Marilyn, that was my attempt! Pretty terrible attempt,” confessed Gaga.

“It’s really more just about any kind of scandal. I mean, there’s been lots of scandals in the White House, but you know, there’s scandals everywhere else, you know, in pop culture and celebrity life and so I was doing sort of a comment about this,” she explained.
