President Obama says that if he owned the Washington Redskins, he’d “think about changing” the team’s controversial name.

He weighed in on the issue during an interview with the Associated Press (see video below).

The President explained that he didn’t think Redskins fans intended to offend anyone with their attachment to the team’s name, but that Native Americans’ sensitivity to the term should be considered.

“If I were the owner of the team and I knew that the name of my team — even if they’ve had a storied history — was offending a sizable group of people, I’d think about changing it,” said Obama.

He added, “All these mascots and team names related to Native Americans… Native Americans feel pretty strongly about it. And I don’t know whether our attachment to a particular name should override the real, legitimate concerns that people have about these things.”
