The morning after Congress passed legislation to lift a government shutdown and avoid a default, broadcast networks broke into regularly scheduled programming to carry the president's remarks.
ABC News aired a special report with George Stephanopoulos anchoring from New York. CBS News' special included reporting from correspondent Bill Plante at the White House and anchored by This Morning host Charlie Rose. From New York, Matt Lauer anchored the NBC News special report.
"There are no winners here," said Obama from the White House on Friday. The president's statement was scheduled for 10:35 am ET, he arrived a few minutes late to make the address. He added: "There was no economic rationale for all of this."
CNN, MSNBC, Fox News promoted online live feeds for coverage of the remarks. In Los Angeles, most local stations -- excluding Fox affiliate KTTV -- aired the speech live.
The president thanked government workers for their service during a shutdown that lasted for more than two weeks. "What you do is important, don't let anyone else tell you different," Obama remarked to government employees.
