Parks and Recreation showrunner Michael Schur is staying put at Universal TV.
News of his new, multiple-year deal comes as Schur prepares to launch a second series, Fox's Brooklyn Nine-Nine, through the studio. Parks, which he writes and executive produces, is heading into its sixth season on NBC.
“Mike is a wildly talented writer and, hands-down, one of the best showrunners in the business,” Universal TV exec VP Bela Bajaria said in a statement announcing the news. “He is funny, collaborative, smart, solution-oriented and incredibly creative. We greatly value our relationship with him and look forward to the success of Parks, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and many other shows. We’re very excited to be collaborating with Mike for years to come.”
Added Schur, a two-time Emmy Award winner: “I couldn’t be happier about extending my stay at Universal TV. Bob [Greenblatt], Jennifer [Salke], Bela and their teams have shown me a tremendous amount of encouragement and support, and not just creatively. This weekend Bob is helping me paint my garage, and Bela is my spotter when I lift.”
Schur currently serves as a writer, executive producer and sometime-director on Parks and Rec and Brooklyn, a co-creation with Dan Goor that's garnering early buzz from critics. Prior or Parks, which Schur co-created with Greg Daniels, he was a writer and producer on Daniels' long-running The Office. Earlier in his career, he wrote for Saturday Night Live, which garnered him an Emmy in 2002.Schur is repped by UTA, David Miner at 3 Arts Entertainment and attorney Ken Richman.
