The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue star displays her cleavage — and a birthday cake — in the shot photographed by Annie Leibovitz.
Vanity Fair debuted in 1913 with a cover illustration of a woman lounging on the moon, an image that Upton and Leibovitz recreate inside the magazine.
Upton tells the magazine that her modeling career has not been without obstacles.
She explains, “I’m not going to name names, but one agency told me, ‘You’re too American, and everybody knows American women are lazy.’ I was so offended! I’ve never been so offended!”
“I was like, ‘You know that you’re in America, right?’ And it wasn’t ‘American models’ — it was ‘American women are lazy,’ period!” recalls Upton. “I feel like a lot of women would disagree with that. A lot!”
It’s a big week for the model, who was just named 2013′s Model of the Year, an honor she’ll receive on Wednesday at the Style Awards in New York.
