Emily Mortimer Comedy Lands at HBO

HBO has picked up Emily Mortimer's comedy Doll & Em. Created by real-life best friends Mortimer (star of HBO's The Newsroom) and fellow British actress Dolly Wells (The Mighty Boosh, Spy), the six-episode series is about a British Hollywood star (Mortimer) who hires her childhood friend (Wells) to be her personal assistant during production on a Hollywood movie. The comedy was commissioned by the U.K.'s Sky Living and will bow there in February.

Mortimer's husband Alessandro Nivola is producing via the couples' King Bee Productions shingle with Stacia Peters, Kevin Comer, Azazel Jacobs, Mortimer and Wells as co-producers.

It's unclear when the series will bow on HBO. But it is the vein of the premium network's satirical half hours including Veep and Bored to Death.

"All of us are very proud to have found the perfect home for Doll & Em at HBO," said Nivola in a statement. "They have been incredibly supportive and share our enthusiasm for the series. This is our first production under King Bee and we couldn't be more thrilled to begin unrolling the exciting projects we have in the pipeline."

Nivola will next be seen in David O. Russell's American Hustle with Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner.

The HBO deal was brokered by David Weber of Sloane Offer Weber & Dern, Jeremy Gawade of Lee & Thompson, Nivola, and Sky Vision (BSkyB’s international distribution arm).
