Boston’s Logan Airport apologized today after a fire training exercise with flames and smoke upset travelers on the 12th anniversary of Sept. 11th.

Boston's Logan International Airport has apologized for a fire drill that went off, triggering smoke and flames, on the 12th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, the Associated Press reports.

The events of 9/11 in many ways started in Boston, as the two hijacked planes that crashed into the World Trade Center flew out of Logan Airport. According to the Massachusetts 9/11 Fund, 206 people from the state or with "strong Massachusetts" ties, died in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick said that it was "just dumb" to plan a fire training exercise on the anniversary of September 11th, according to the Boston Globe.

I didn't know it was going to happen, and it's just dumb. The timing could not be worse... I have to believe they just didn't catch this... The people who experienced 9/11 -- many of whom work at Massport -- I just feel so sorry.
