MTV has renewed The Real World for a 29th season.
The long-running reality series, which debuted back in 1992, will return to the city of San Francisco for the upcoming run, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. The new season will premiere in 2014.
"We're excited about returning to San Francisco, the location of one of our most memorable seasons of The Real World," said executive producer Jonathan Murray. "The city has always been a great place for young people to explore who they are and what they want to do with their lives."
The third season of Real World -- which took place in 1994 -- was set in San Francisco and included memorable guests like bad boy David "Puck" Rainey and the late Pedro Zamora. (Zamora died in 1994 at 22 from AIDS.)
While Real World was hailed as a groundbreaking reality series when it premiered on television, it has seen its ratings slowly decrease as the years have gone by. The most recent season of Real World: Portland ended with 1.05 million viewers in June.
In an interview with THR in July, MTV president Susanne Daniels conceded that ratings for recent iterations of Real World have been low. "The ratings are a little soft on that show," she said at the time. "That felt like breakthrough television when it started, much like Cops did."
Over the past two decades, MTV has spun off Real World into notable spinoffs like The Challenge, currently airing its Rivals II edition.
The Real World was created for MTV by Murray and the late Mary Ellis-Bunim of Bunim/Murray Productions.
