You might think that states with the heaviest drinking rates also have the highest rates of fatal car accidents. But, that’s not the case.
This matrix illustrates how responsible residents of each state are in terms of drinking. More responsible states are those whose drinkers consume more alcohol and are involved in fewer alcohol-related traffic fatalities. Less responsible states are those whose drinkers consume less alcohol yet are involved in more alcohol-related traffic fatalities.
This map provides a measure of responsibility: the amount of alcohol consumption related to the number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities. Responsibility is presented as a function of color: Light purple represents less responsible states, while dark purple represents more responsible states.
The Five Least Responsible States
More residents died and less residents got drunk. These states had the lowest ratios of alcohol consumption per capita per year to the number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities per licensed driver.
