The broadcast television networks announce their new shows and new schedules the week of May 13. Here's what's happened so far, and what's still up in the air.
Every year in mid-May, the broadcast networks — NBC, Fox, ABC, CBS, and the CW — roll out their new schedules and new shows to advertisers. It used to also be a time when shows on the bubble would learn of their fates. That last practice has become less dramatic in recent years, as most of the networks now favor early renewals for shows that are both obvious hits (NCIS) and ones with passionate, smaller fan bases: Parenthood on NBC, for example, is usually a nail-biter, but this year, NBC went ahead and picked it up early for a full 22 episodes. (Whew!) So going into this year's upfronts, there aren't that many big questions for returning shows. What NBC will do with Go On and The New Normal might be keeping a few people up at night; over on the CW, Nikita and The Carrie Diaries dangle in the balance. ABC's Happy Endings is probably the biggest question — and then, if it is canceled, will a cable channel like USA rescue it?
The upfronts begin in New York City on May 13. Fox and NBC both go that day; ABC is on May 14; CBS is May 15; and the CW is May 16. Announcements about new shows will start leaking out sooner than that, though. (I'll deal with those in separate posts: Stay tuned.)
Oh, and cable networks TNT/TBS and USA also do big presentations and have parties that week, too, but they're not on the same crazy schedule as the networks, so I'm not including them here.
I'll keep updating this post as news comes in. Just because something hasn't been renewed yet doesn't mean it's necessarily in trouble (like CBS' Criminal Minds and NBC's Parks & Recreation, which would both be shocking cancellations). And one more thing: Of all the networks, ABC has done no early renewals, so don't freak out about that list.
Yay, TV!
