This Is What Medieval Russian Doodles Looked Like

The drawing above, as well as the others on the list, were created by a Russian boy named Onfim. He lived in Novgorod (a state that existed from 1136-1478, occupying part of what we today call Russia) during the late 1100's/early 1200's.

Onfim created the drawings while he was learning how to write. In the drawing above, he's on horseback, defeating an enemy. He labeled himself. You can see "Onfim" next to the mounted knight.
