Demi Lovato was honored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for her work as a mentor to young people facing such challenges in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday.

The pop singer, who has been open about her past struggles with bipolar disorder, bulimia, drugs and cutting, received an award from the U.S. Health Department at the National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day press briefing.
In her moving acceptance speech, Lovato told the audience, “Every young person faces challenges as they work toward becoming an independent adult, and for those with mental health challenges, it can be even more of a struggle.”
“I want those young adults to know that your life has meaning and you can reach out to someone you trust for support and overcome any challenges in your life,” the star added.
National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day is observed on Thursday, May 9.
