Roger Ebert has died.

He was 70.

The legendary film critic had battled cancer in recent years.

His employer, The Chicago Sun-Times, confirmed the sad news on Thursday.

It was only two days ago that Ebert revealed his cancer had returned in a blog post; he said he’d be taking a “leave of presence” from his duties.

Wednesday had marked his 46th anniversary as film critic for the Sun-Times.

The first movie critic to win the Pulitzer Prize, Ebert was a television fixture for decades with fellow pundit Gene Siskel, who died in 1999.

He was the author of more than a dozen books on movies and the first critic to be presented with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
