Roger Ebert’s cancer has returned.
The film critic announced the sad news on his online journal on Tuesday night, saying that he will take a “leave of presence” from his column with the Chicago Sun-Times and his own personal blog.
Ebert revealed that the cancer was discovered when he was treated for a hip fracture in December.
He wrote, “The ‘painful fracture’ that made it difficult for me to walk has recently been revealed to be a cancer. It is being treated with radiation, which has made it impossible for me to attend as many movies as I used to.”
Ebert said he will not be going away, but will be “reviewing only the movies I want to review.”
He added that he also “may write about what it’s like to cope with health challenges and the limitations they can force upon you,” and shared, “It really stinks that the cancer has returned and that I have spent too many days in the hospital. So on bad days I may write about the vulnerability that accompanies illness. On good days, I may wax ecstatic about a movie so good it transports me beyond illness.”
Ebert was first diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2002, and was stricken with salivary gland cancer the following year. He later lost his ability to speak and eat due to complications from surgery and facial reconstruction.
Wednesday is Ebert’s 46th anniversary as the Chicago Sun-Times’ film critic.
