Justin Bieber is drawing backlash for writing in the guest book at Amsterdam’s Anne Frank House that he hoped the 15-year-old Holocaust victim “would have been a Belieber.”

The museum posted the pop star’s entry on its Facebook page, and the status has received more than 2,000 comments, with users calling Bieber’s remarks “disrespectful,” “ignorant,” “self-serving” and much worse.

However, the Anne Frank House tried to downplay the controversy in a later post, writing, “The Anne Frank House was pleased to welcome Justin Bieber to the Anne Frank House last Friday. We think it is very positive that he took the time and effort to visit our museum.”

“He was very interested in the story of Anne Frank and stayed for over an hour. We hope that his visit will inspire his fans to learn more about her life and hopefully read the diary,” added the museum.

A spokesperson for the historical site told Reuters they were “a bit overwhelmed” by the reactions to Bieber’s guestbook entry, saying, “He’s a 19-year-old boy taking the effort to come and see the museum, and we’d like to point that out, and I think it’s quite innocent what he put down.”

A Bieber source even told People, “Someone told Justin during the tour that Anne was very into pop culture and probably would’ve been a fan of Justin.”

But a new wave of backlash has erupted.

TMZ has published photos of a sunglasses and hat-clad Bieber boxing with a friend in the basement of the museum.
