The remarks came during a HuffPost Live interview on Thursday, when “The Borgias” actor explained that he doesn’t “have a strong feeling” on the issue, but that using the word “marriage” with gay couples makes him “worry” that it leads society to “somehow debase or change what marriage is.”

Irons wanted to play out some hypotheticals in terms of tax implications with expanding the notion of marriage.

“Could a father not marry his son?” asked the actor, wondering whether it could be beneficial in the transfer of property.

When the interviewer pointed out that there are laws against incest, Irons replied, “It’s not incest between men. Incest is there to protect us from… inbreeding. But men don’t breed. So incest doesn’t cover that.”

After some back and forth, Irons went on to clarify, “I don’t have a strong feeling either way… I just wish everybody who’s living with one other person the best of luck in the world, because it’s fantastic.”
