Carey Mulligan graces the May cover of Vogue as Daisy Buchanan, her character from The Great Gatsby.

The Oscar nominee stars as the classic literary character in the highly-anticipated Baz Luhrmann film adaptation co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Mulligan did extensive research for the role, drawing inspiration from Zelda Fitzgerald, and even finding a similarity between Fitzgerald, Buchanan, and one of today’s most famous celebrity families.

“‘I seem always curiously interested in myself, and it’s so much fun to stand off and look at me. . . .’ That’s a direct Zelda quote,” she tells the magazine. “It’s that kind of feeling: I’m-so-little-and-there’s-nothing-to-me, watch-me-have-nothing-to-me. She feels like she’s living in a movie of her own life.”

Mulligan continues, “She’s constantly on show, performing all the time. Nothing bad can happen in a dream. You can’t die in a dream. She’s in her own TV show. She’s like a Kardashian.”

But that’s not the lifestyle the private actress seeks to emulate, admitting to Vogue, “I once put my hand on my hip on the red carpet and regretted it instantly.”

And she’s quite anxious for the reaction to Gatsby, which she says “was crazy and exhausting and quite overwhelming, the biggest, craziest production I’ve ever been involved in.”

“I’m fully prepared to be completely ripped apart. Well, I’m not prepared; that’s the thing. I don’t want to be torn apart,” says Mulligan. “We’ve all just tried something; we had fun, and we tried to do something interesting and exciting, something that people could connect with.”

Happily married to musician Marcus Mumford with more movies on the horizon, Mulligan goes on to confess in Vogue, “It’s unsettling that you get exactly what you wanted.”

But, she notes, her career is no longer “the focus of my life.”

“It’s what I love doing but it’s not everything,” says Mulligan.

The May issue hits newsstands April 23.
