Oz the Great and Powerful dominated the weekend box office, scoring the third-biggest March domestic opening in history.

The pseudo-prequel to The Wizard of Oz, starring James Franco, earned approximately $80.3 million in its debut, giving the fantasy-adventure a gigantic win over the field.

Only The Hunger Games (2012) and Alice in Wonderland (2010) have had bigger March debuts.

Last weekend’s champ, Jack the Giant Slayer, slid to the #2 spot with $10 million, while the Jason Bateman-Melissa McCarthy comedy Identity Thief continued to do solid business with $6.3 million in its fifth week of release.

Dead Man Down opened to $5.4 million, just ahead of holdover Snitch at $5.1 million and college romp 21 & Over at $5 million.

Safe Haven and Silver Linings Playbook are in a virtual tie for seventh place with approximately $3.7 million apiece.

The Top 10 chart should round out with the animated Escape from Planet Earth ($3.2 million) and The Last Exorcism Part II ($3.1 million).
