Middle Schooler Blasts Hello Kitty Into Space

It's cool everyone, she did it for science.

Lauren Rojas, a 12-year-old from Antioch, California, lofted her prized Hello Kitty doll 17 miles above the Earth's surface using a weather balloon. She documented the flight with GoPro cameras, along with a battery of sensors to measure temperature, elevation, and pressure. The balloon popped at 93,625 feet, leaving the plush animal to parachute back to Earth, landing in a tree roughly 48 miles from the launch point.
