Eva Longoria Talks About a Political Compromise on Immigration

Appearing on a Sunday political talk show, Eva Longoria stated that the U.S. immigration system is "broken" but expressed hope that Republicans are realizing that they need to make a compromise with President Obama in order enact change.

"It’s a very broken system," the actress told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on This Week.

"I think Republicans are coming around to the idea that they're going to have to compromise with the president on a lot of issues, immigration being one of them," she said..

Longoria served as a co-chair for Obama's re-election campaign and had appeared at election events to stump for the president during the 2012 contest. She also gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte in support of the president.

“What I am hopeful about is that this administration, and particularly President Obama, sees that immigration is an economic issue,” Longoria stated on This Week. "It's also, for me, a humanitarian issue."

When asked by Stephanopoulos about a Wall Street Journal report that said Longoria hadn't ruled out "politics in the future," the Desperate Housewives actress remarked that, while she loved her home state of Texas, she wouldn't seek a political office.

Longoria has long held the belief, however, that political activism should be encouraged. The star wrote an op-ed in The Hollywood Reporter last May explaining her thoughts on dedicating time to work for the Obama campaign.

"I think as a celebrity you get knocked for 'What does she know?,'" Longoria wrote. "I look at it as being a citizen. As a celebrity, I have a way to reach people, but you need to be authentic."
