“Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together,” the live, one-hour benefit telethon to raise money for victims of the destructive storm that devastated the East Coast this week, raised nearly $23 million.
The American Red Cross and NBCUniversal announced on Saturday that the event triggered a record number of individual donations by phone, text and online.
“We are incredibly grateful and humbled by this outpouring of support for those who are suffering as a result of Superstorm Sandy,” said American Red Cross officer Peggy Dyer in a statement.
She added, “Our preliminary results of nearly $23 million raised are an extraordinary example of how the American people pull together in times of disaster. Their generous donations will go directly to those in need, and we urge the public to continue to give.”
The event, hosted by Matt Lauer, featured performances by artists like Mary J. Blige, Jon Bon Jovi and Sting, as well as appearances by notables like Tina Fey and Whoopi Goldberg.
Christina Aguilera opened the evening with an emotional rendition of “Beautiful” (watch here); and Bruce Springsteen, Steven Tyler, Billy Joel and Jimmy Fallon teamed up for a special “Under the Boardwalk” (watch here).
As big a number as $23 million is, it’s just a start.
