Paul Shaffer Planning to Quit The Late Show with David Letterman?

Is David Letterman about to lose Paul Shaffer, his bandleader and sidekick of 30 years?

That’s what a number of outlets are reporting after Shaffer gave an interview to TV Guide Canada in which he’s quoted as saying, “We’ve been on 30 years so now we’ve got another two years… I’m going to be certainly ready to lie down after that, take a nap.”

The comment was widely interpreted to mean that Shaffer intends to quit “The Late Show” in 2014, when his current contract expires.

But Shaffer’s words were misconstrued, and he’s now clearing up the speculation.

“In an interview with a reporter, I made two unrelated points which, joined together, seem to say something that isn’t true,” Shaffer says in a statement to Gossip Cop.

He explains, “It’s true that the show was recently extended for two years, and yes, someday when it’s all over, I will most likely take a nap. But I hope that day never comes. As long as the show goes on, I will be there for as long as Dave wants me on it.”

There you have it.
