Jerry Nelson, the legendary puppeteer who portrayed the numbers-obsessed Count von Count on “Sesame Street,” has died.

He was 78.

As a longtime Jim Henson collaborator, Nelson lent his talents to “The Muppet Show,” “Fraggle Rock” and other Muppet ventures.

But his work as the batty vampire on “Sesame Street,” beginning in 1972, may have been his most lasting legacy, helping to teach generations of kids about math.

In addition to The Count, whom Nelson portrayed until his 2004 retirement, the puppeteer had a hand in creating Muppets such as Mr. Snuffleupagus, Camilla the Chicken, and Kermit the Frog’s nephew Robin.

“Jerry Nelson imbued all his characters with the same gentle, sweet whimsy and kindness that were a part of his own personality,” said Henson’s daughter Lisa in a statement. “He joined The Jim Henson Company in the earliest years, and his unique contributions to the worlds of Fraggles, Muppets, Sesame Street and so many others are, and will continue to be, unforgettable.”
