As Gossip Cop previously reported, Gangster Squad is based on the true story of Los Angeles mobster Mickey Cohen, played by Sean Penn, who ruthlessly fights back as cops attempt to take him down.

In a tragic — and horrifying — coincidence, one of the gun-heavy scenes featured in the film’s trailer showcases several shooters firing into a movie theater audience as chaos and panic ensue.
