It won't hit theaters until Christmas 2012, but if the first official trailer is any indication, Baz Luhrman's big screen adaptation of The Great Gatsby is going to do justice to F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 classic novel.
The film centers on the wealthy Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio, 37) and the apple of his eye, Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan, 26). Tobey Maguire, 36, plays narrator Nick Carraway.
In typical Luhrman fashion, the visuals used to recreate the roaring '20s are magnificently intricate. The film, which will also be released in 3-D, also features modern music from Kanye West, 34, Jay-Z, 42, and Jack White, 36.

In one brief snippet, DiCaprio and Mulligan's characters are seen making love in Gatsby's bed. In another, a violent Gatsby grabs a man by the throat.

This is DiCaprio's second film with the director; the two collaborated on 1996's Romeo + Juliet, Luhrman's take on William Shakespeare's tragedy. The movie also starred Claire Danes, 33.
