Wisconsin Democrats have filed a complaint with the Government Accountability Board. “SUBGATE”!
MADISON, Wisconsin — The Wisconsin Democratic Party announced Tuesday its filing of an election bribery complaint against Rep. Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney, for giving voters sandwiches at a lunch spot in Waukesha.
Per their release: "In the bribery video, Romney clearly exclaims, 'So bring your friends to the polls, get out and vote and if you want another sandwich, there are more back there,' gesturing to where he and Ryan were handing out the bribes of varying meats, dressings and bread choices the voters could choose from."
An "emergency" press conference was held this afternoon in Milwaukee to discuss "SubGate," and the Democrats say they have filed an official complaint with the Government Accountability board in Wisconsin.
The clause in the Wisconsin election laws that forms the basis for SubGate applies to anyone who "Offers, gives, lends or promises to give or lend, or endeavors to procure, anything of value, or any office or employment or any privilege or immunity to, or for, any elector, or to or for any other person, in order to induce any elector to" vote or not vote. "Anything of value" is defined as anything worth more than one dollar.
Such charges and counter-charges are a staple of election day campaigning, as is free food, and legal scholars appear not to believe that Romney is in legal jeopardy.
