Robert De Niro is being criticized for his remarks at a Monday night campaign event attended by Michelle Obama, during which the actor joked that America might not be ready for a “white First Lady.”

De Niro was introducing Obama when he told the crowd, “Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white First Lady?”

According to reports, the crowd cheered, after which De Niro joked, “Too soon, right?”

Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich was not happy, calling the remarks “inexcusable” and “utterly and terribly unacceptable.”

“On behalf of my wife and on behalf of Karen Santorum and on behalf of Ann Romney, I think that Robert De Niro’s wrong,” Gingrich said on Tuesday. “I think the country is ready for a new First Lady and he doesn’t have to describe it in racial terms.”

Gingrich called on President Obama to apologize for De Niro’s joke.

Michelle Obama’s reelection campaign has now responded.

“We believe the joke was inappropriate,” said press secretary Olivia Alair in a statement.
