The Iron Lady actress gave a speech before Clinton’s address, describing what they share in common and emphasizing how her own achievements as an actress pale when compared to the U.S. Secretary of State’s.

To punctuate her remarks, Streep surprised everyone by placing her Oscar on the podium.

“This is what you get when you play a world leader,” she said of the prize. “But if you want a real world leader, and you’re really, really lucky, this is what you get!”

With that, Clinton came out, later joking, “I’m just glad [Meryl] didn’t do a movie called The Devil Wears Pantsuits!”
