Safe House Edges Out The Vow For Holiday Weekend Box Office

BOX OFFICE

Another close race is unfolding at the box office, with new releases and holdovers both performing well over the long Presidents Day Weekend.

Early estimates put The Vow, starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, at the top of the heap with $29 million.

That sum would put the romantic comedy ahead of a trio of thrill rides – Denzel Washington’s Safe House ($26 million), Dwayne Johnson’s Journey 2 ($25 million) and Nicolas Cage’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance ($25 million).

High-tech espionage rom com This Means War, in which Tom Hardy and Chris Pine fight over Reese Witherspoon, is on pace to open to $18 million and fifth place.

Found footage sci-fi flick Chronicle ($10 million) and blockbuster re-release Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace 3D ($9 million) should finish ahead of the Daniel Radcliffe horror period piece The Woman in Black ($8 million).

The animated The Secret World of Arrietty ($7 million) and Liam Neeson’s The Grey ($4 million) should round out the Top 10.
